Deep Dive · Demand Planning Card

Transforming Demand Planning through Design Thinking

A full end-to-end redesign: from a legacy table-based tool to a visual, graph-driven forecasting experience. This is the full design thinking journey.

The transformation at a glance

Legacy Demand Planning interface
BeforeLegacy · table-based · rigid
The Vision · Last Prototype
The VisionInteractive prototype · iterated
The Reality · Production Implementation
AfterVisual · graph-driven · intuitive

The Challenge

Users struggled with a rigid, outdated interface.

The legacy Demand Planning module relied on complex table-based configurations and manual inputs, time-consuming and error-prone. Hidden options, poor navigation, and weak information architecture reduced task completion speed by 50% and significantly lowered user satisfaction.

Problem Statement

"How might we make the Demand Planning tool more performant, ergonomic, simple and efficient to optimise forecasts and anticipate hazards?"

Surfaced through workshops with Professional Services, Architects, and Customer Success teams, and validated against real usage data.

Namadoo, 30 · Demand Planner

Responsible for aligning market predictions with budget constraints. Strong supply chain experience. Uses the tool daily and needs it to be fast, reliable, and trustworthy.

"I predict the future of our products and I need tools that help me do that with confidence."

Key Pain Points

  • Complex tabular configurations, high error risk
  • No visibility of data trends at a glance
  • Hidden options, poor navigation
  • Weak information architecture
  • No distinction between basic and advanced users

What We Changed

  • Timeline-based visual design replacing tables
  • ML model selection built into the interface
  • Configuration separated from mass treatment
  • Organised by usage frequency & user profile
  • Advanced tools for experts; simple defaults for all

Designing for Global Telecom Leaders

At Cisco's Design Studio, I collaborated with cross-functional teams across Europe, Asia, and the USA to deliver tailored TV and media experiences for Liberty Global and Vodafone — two of the world's largest telecom operators.

Liberty Global — The Challenge

  • Set-top box product matured over 4 years but had usability and practicality issues in key features
  • Country managers across 7 markets reporting user dissatisfaction with certain functionalities
  • Missing features — VOD and Replay TV — were reducing product competitiveness

Process

Client Collaboration

Monthly trips to Amsterdam for reviews, feedback collection, and roadmap discussions. Built trust by actively listening to country managers and addressing regional user needs.

Design Tailoring

Analysed feedback to refine existing features. Aligned future features (VOD, Replay) with Liberty Global's specific goals, ensuring scalability across all 7 countries.

Cross-Cultural Bridge

Facilitated collaboration between Dutch client teams and Cisco's French Design Studio, resolving misalignments and establishing a collaborative working model.

Team Coordination

Led a cross-functional squad of PM, designer, product owner, and technical leader. Indirectly managed graphic and technical designers to align with Liberty Global's standards.

Impact

My Design Process

Design Thinking in Practice

Not a checklist, but a way of working.
Here's how each step translated into real decisions on real projects, at Sunstice and at Cisco.

01

Discovery

Getting to the real problem

  • At Sunstice: Ran workshops with Professional Services, the team that knew where users actually struggled. Discovered the Demand Planning card wasn't just slow: it was causing misconfiguration.
  • At Cisco: Monthly trips to Amsterdam to hear Liberty Global country managers describe regional user dissatisfaction first-hand — not filtered through a PM.
  • Output: consolidated user requirements, pain points, and a clear problem statement for each project.
02

Ideation

Breaking out of the obvious solution

  • At Sunstice: Crazy 8s sessions stopped the team from just "fixing the table." 8 minutes, 8 sketches, engineers and PS in the room, forced divergence before convergence.
  • Studio Design brought the competing perspectives (UX, tech, business) into one room to challenge and combine concepts.
  • Outcome: Shifted from table-first to graph-first — a fundamentally different mental model for forecasting.
03

Prototyping

Making it real before building it

  • At Sunstice and CISCO: High-fidelity prototypes with real supply chain data, not dummy content. Stakeholders could feel the difference immediately.
  • Investor pitch: Built a futuristic Bloom prototype that secured Cathay Capital and Sagard — design work that directly drove business outcomes.
  • Design system: One shared documented library that kept all 7+ modules coherent across France & China teams.
04

Feedback Loops

Iterating until it works in real life

  • At Sunstice: Professional Services reviewed every cycle and they translated real user friction into design input, not abstract requirements.
  • At Cisco: Monthly Amsterdam reviews with Liberty Global managers that caught cultural friction early, before it became a delivery crisis.
  • Iterated until Gartner users wrote unprompted: "intuitive, powerful, fully configurable."
05

Delivery & Impact

Measuring what actually changed

  • Increased adoption by 35% across 7+ Modules
  • +30% usability improvement on the Demand Planning Card across all user profiles.
  • Liberty Global: user satisfaction validated by country manager feedback across 7 markets.
  • Design work featured in Gartner peer reviews — rare for UX to be named specifically by clients.
06

Leadership

Building the conditions for good design

  • Mentored up to 7 designers and integrators; ensuring the process was taught, not just applied.
  • At Cisco: bridged Dutch client and French design studio and resolved a long-running collaboration breakdown.
  • At Infor: first designer on SyteLine; evangelised UX thinking in a purely engineering culture.
  • Monthly cross-functional brainstorming sessions kept design from becoming a bottleneck.
